Launched in September 2022 and funded by the John Templeton Foundation, the Templeton Research project is significantly advancing its goal of examining how Outward Bound programming promotes character development across cultures. The project team includes researchers from Penn State University & the Kurt Hahn Consortium for Values & Experiential Learning, Clemson University, and the University of Utah, collaborating closely with the OBI staff team.
In 2024, the team completed Phase 2, conducting comprehensive case studies at eleven Outward Bound Schools. These studies involved on-site observations, direct participation in student experiences, and discussions with staff and participants. A crucial outcome of this phase was a data analysis meeting , during which five themes central to character development during Outward Bound courses were refined. These themes will now guide the cross-case analysis in Phase 3, aiming to produce impactful and actionable insights.
A significant 2024 milestone was the Staff Symposium in Romania, where Project Liaisons—staff representatives from participating schools—acted as "co-researchers." Their invaluable perspectives are ensuring that research findings resonate across the global network. This gathering promoted collaboration, connection, and collective learning, thereby strengthening the project's foundation.
As the project enters its final phase in 2025, the research team will focus on deeper cross-case analyses and the dissemination of findings. They are committed to delivering conclusions and resources that will benefit and enhance the effectiveness of the Outward Bound network.
